   Mother's Day 2015

    Mother's Day

International Mothers Day being celebrated this year  on Sunday May 10, 2015.  Mother's Day is celebrated on second Sunday of May every year to pay tribute and appreciation towards mothers worldwide.

Sadly India contribute s about a quarter of all global meteranal death. According to World Health Organization's report in maternal mortality estimates 1950 to 2013, an estimated 289,000 women died in 2013 from complications in pregnancy and childbirth, India is among the 10 countries that accounted for 58 per cent of the global maternal deaths.

The World's Mothers Don't Always Get The Care They Need

Every year, Save the Children releases its State of the World's Mothers Report , highlighting the best and worst places in the world to be a mother. In India the report found the largest gaps between rich and poor. The poorest children in cities across India are three times as likely as the wealthiest children to die before their fifth birthday. In India nearly 300,000 babies die the day they are born more than any other country in the world, accounting for nearly a third of all newborn deaths worldwide.

And we found that 50,000 mothers die each year in India as a result of birth complications, versus 1,200 in the United States. But the poor bear the greatest burden not only in the developing world but in the U.S. as well.

  History of Mother's Day

The earliest history of Mothers Day dates back to the ancient Hindu Vedic period where Mata, the Goddess were worshiped in every spiritual celebrations. For thousands of years Hindus have been celebrating a ten-day festival, Goddess Durga Puja, honoring the divine mother Durga, in early October. Later it  was an annual spring festival where the Greeks dedicated to maternal goddesses.

The Greeks used the occasion to honor Rhea, wife of Cronus and the mother of many deities of Greek mythology. The more recent history of Mothers Day dates back to 1600s in England. Here a Mothering Sunday was celebrated annually on the fourth Sunday of Lent to honor mothers. After a prayer service in church to honor Virgin Mary, children brought gifts and flowers to pay tribute to their own mothers.

The idea of official celebration of Mothers day in US was first suggested by Julia Ward Howe in 1872. An activist, writer and poet Julia shot to fame with her famous Civil War song, "Battle Hymn of the Republic".  Latter Anna Jarvis is recognised as the Founder of Mothers Day in US.

By 1911, Mother's Day was celebrated in almost every state in the Union and on May 8, 1914 President Woodrow Wilson signed a Joint Resolution designating the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day. Today Mother's Day is celebrated in several countries including US, UK, India, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, Mexico, Canada, China, Japan and Belgium.

  Mother's Day In India:

For thousands of years Hindus have been celebrating a ten-day festival, Durga Puja, honouring the divine mother Durga, in early October. But now 'Mother's Day' has also come to become a part of our culture. Today in India we also have an opportunity to honour and show our appreciation for our flesh and blood mother.

According to the National Family Survey there are around 23 million child brides in the country. In rural India nearly 71 per cent girls were married  before they turned 18..Again  the cases of  crime against women, cases of female foeticide, child marrige and dowry are rising. MOTHER'S
