Bumper crop of onion but no storage facility.
Jaipur, May 12, 2008: There was a bumper crop of onion this year in Churu and Shekhawati region where you can pick up a kilo of onion for as little as Re 2. But the farmers are helpless as there have no storage facility. The worst-affected districts include Churu, Sikar and Jhunjhunu where onion prices in wholesale markets have hit rock-bottom. Not a single cold-storage facility is vailable in the three districts. Ironically, chief minister Vasundhara Raje had on several occasions assured the farmers of the region that they would be provided exclusive onion storage facilities.
In the absence of such facilities and direct links with outside markets, these farmers are selling onions to middlemen and retail market agents at throwaway prices - between Re 1 and Rs 2 a kg. The Shekhawati belt is one of the largest onion-producing regions in north India and these onions have a typical white tinge compared to the red onions grown in the Nashik belt of Maharashtra.
