   Ganpati bappa morya in Mumbai
  
The chanting of  "Ganpati bappa morya, pudcha varshi laukar ya" (Hail Lord Ganesh, return again soon next year) will be in the air for next 10 days in Mumbai during festival of Ganesh Chaturthi. Ganesh Chaturthi or Ganpati Festival being observed from September 1, 2011 in India . The festival is also called Vinayaka Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chavithi. 
   
  Ganesh Chaturthi festival marks the birthday of Lord Ganesha (श्री गणेश)  and it is celebrated on the 4th day of the bright half of Bhadrapad, September 1,2011 this year. Lord Ganesha is the god of wisdom and prosperity and it is believed that for the fulfillment of one's desires, his blessing is absolutely necessary.

  The Ganesh Chaturthi or Ganpati Festival last 10 days and during these days people stalled Ganesha
idols in their homes and streets corners where prayers are offered on daily basis.

    The entire city was decked in rich colours with chants of 'Ganapati Bappa Maurya' resounding in every nook and corner of Mumbai on Thursday September 1, as people gathered in lacs to welcome the first day of the 11-day Ganesh festival. Reports said that nearly two lac idols were installed across the city, of which 10,350 were at Ganesh Mandals. Some of these idols have been insured for crores of rupees, it is learnt. The GSB Mandal at King's Circle is said to have insured its pandal, devotees and the deity's ornaments for Rs 222 crore for a 15-day period. Over 12,500 registered associations, apart from the 40,000 private housing complexes, have been preparing for the festival for the past few weeks.
   Among the various pandals across the city, 'Lal Baughcha Raja' (King of Lalbaug area) in central Mumbai, with a 12-foot tall idol towering over the devotees, attracted huge crowds. The pandal was insured for Rs 14 crore. The other popular mandals in the city include 'Ganesh Galli', just a stone's throw from the Lal Baughcha Raja, Khetwadicha Raja on Grant Road, and Chandanwadi Ganesh mandal in Kalbadevi. 

 

  Maha-aarti for environment awareness  
  The state pollution board wants the chief minister and his cabinet colleagues to perform a Maha-aarti during the forthcoming Ganesh festival to create environment consciousness.  The objective said officials, is to create environment consciousness. "The idea is to perform the aarti before Lalbaugcha Raja, which is famous for granting a person's wish," said an MPCB official. The pollution board will be seeking chief minister Prithviraj Chavan's
go-ahead for the puja as well as to fix a date for the same.

  Ganesh festival culminates on the day of Ananta Chaturdashi when images (murtis) of Ganesha are immersed in the most convenient body of water.
