University of Mumbai
The University of Mumbai was founded by Dr. John Wilson in 1857 and is modelled on
the universities of Britain. In 1996, the name of the university was changed from University of Bombay to University of Mumbai, according to
a Government Gazette. Most of the colleges in Mumbai and the districts of Thane
, Raigad , Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg are affiliated with the University of Mumbai. In suburban Mumbai, the university campus is
located at Kalina, Santacruz. Another campus located in Fort carries out administrative work only.
The University of Mumbai large campus is situated in Kalina , Santacruz in suburban Mumbai. Much of its 230 acre
area is reserved for the development of future disciplines. It has on-campus graduate training and research centers. Several
departments offering courses in the streams of science, technology, commerce and humanities are located here. However, all colleges of
engineering affiliated to the University of Mumbai are privately-owned.
The university does not have an engineering department and Department of Medicine of its own. Jawaharlal Nehru Library
The central library, Jawaharlal Nehru Library (JNL) is located in the
campus at Kalina. The Library houses 850,000 books, documents and scientific
journals, theses , encyclopedias, nearly 30,000 microfilms and over 1,200 rare manuscripts, IMF
reports, census records and several hundreds of e-journals.
The technology and applied research journals and books of the University
of Mumbai are kept at other libraries including those at ICT, TIFR, JBIMS and Tata Memorial Hospital. Together the University of Mumbai
collection of books and scientific journals includes over a million documents.
Rajabai Clock Tower
The Rajabai Clock Tower one of Mumbai's landmarks is situated in the Mumbai University campus at Fort. It
houses the University Library.
It is 280 feet tall with five storeys. At a height of 30 feet from the ground, there are eight statues representing the Indian castes.
The tower clock is reported to have played 16 tunes
The foundation stone of Rajabai Clock Tower was laid on March 1, 1869 and construction was
completed in November 1878. The total cost of construction came to
Rs. 2 lakhs was defrayed by Premchand Roychand, a prosperous broker who founded the Bombay
Stock Exchange on the condition that the tower be named after his mother
Rajabai. Premchand Roychand's mother was blind and as a staunch follower of Jain religion she was
supposed to consume her dinner before
evening. The evening bell of the tower helped her to know the time without anyone's help.
Community radio of the University of Mumbai
MUST radio, viz Mumbai University Students Transmission is the community radio of the University of Mumbai which can be heard on 107.8
MHz FM. It was inagurated on the 29th of Feb 2008 by the President of India
Smt. Pratibha Patil. MUST radio broadcast times are 8am to 9 pm. The community radio serves
as a meaningful radio for all those who want to know more about the university, its activities and also gives a great platform for the
creative juices of all the students. University Of Mumbai. It serves as a platform to provide vital information to all the people
regarding education, public health , women empowerment and socially relevant issues in an
entertaining manner. The radio plans to cater to the 20 lakh students of the university and all the affiliated colleges. |
