Holi Festival (होली) known as festival of Colours
being celebrated in Mumbai on March 7 to March 9, 2012. Holi closes the wide gaps between social
classes of any age, sex, status, and caste together. In Mumbai
also the rich and poor, women and men, enjoy each other’s presence on this joyous day. Even
the stardom equally enjoy this festival of Holi.
Holi in Maharashtra
Holi in Maharashtra is mainly associated with the burning of
Holika.Holi Paurnima. It is also celebrated as Shimga. On the day of Holi, the firewood is arranged in a huge pile at a clearing
in the locality. In the evening, the fire is lit. Every household makes an offering of a meal and dessert to the fire god. Puran Poli is the
main delicacy and children shout "Holi re Holi puranachi poli". Shimga is associated with the elimination of all evil.
The color celebrations here traditionally take place on the day of Rangapanchami
, 5 days after Holi, unlike in other Indian states where it is done on the second day itself. During this festival, people are
supposed to forget about any rivalries and start new healthy relations with all.
Colourful festival of Bollywood
Bollywood has always given new flavours to colourful festival of
Holi and has taken the spirit of this festival on a new high. Films like 'Silsila', 'Sholay', 'Mother India' and 'Darr' have
unforgettably captured the fun with colours. Songs like "Rang barse",
"Holi ke din", "Holi aaye re kanhai" and "Ang se ang lagana" remain
timeless and in real life, many consider Holi celebrations incomplete
without these playing in the backdrop. Ravi Chopra, Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini managed to create the old
world charm of Holi with "Hori khele Raghuveera" in the superhit family drama 'Baghban' (2003).

Bombay HC banning bull races in state
The Bombay high court on March 5, 2012 suggested to the state
government to withdraw its corrigendum and allow non-castrated bulls to
participate in bullock cart races. The Central government has banned bullock exhibitions and races in the
country. The court made this observation after it was informed that the bullock
cart races would be conducted for Holi on March 7 and 8 across the state. |
