Christmas & New Year's in Mumbai

The "Happy Christmas" gained usage in the late 19th century, and is still common in the U.K. and Ireland alongside "Merry Christmas". In the United States, the collective phrase "Happy Holidays" is often used as a generic cover-all greeting for all of the winter holidays, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, New Year's Day. Using "Happy Holidays" and "Season's Greetings" throughout the season, reserving "Merry Christmas" for December 25.
Christmas celebration has become a global celebration and for
Mumbaikars it is the festival of cakes and candles, carols and celebrations, Santa and his sledge, and Christmas trees and decorations. To celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on December 25, people have already begun preparations. Christmas trees are being purchased, old ones are being brought down from the attic and families are out shopping for new decorations to ring in the festive spirit .
Christmas is a time to share our joys, a time to make merry and exchange gifts with our loved-ones. Keeping that in mind, restaurants and hotels in and around Mumbai have come up with creative hampers and food items in their menus to compliment palates.

Christmas shopping
In Christmas time Bandra's Hill Road is the preferred shopping destination for Mumbaikars. Bandra has an East- Indian crowd and so it has a more festive feel. The products here have more variety and make for better decorative furniture. Back home there are shops but they do not have the kind of products sell here.

  Trained Santa Claus
In August, Mad Hatters, an Andheri-based event management company, conducted auditions of people willing to play Santa Claus at city malls, high-profile Christmas parties and five star hotels. They are currently training 28 people who applied for the post. They will wear an imported white-cuffed red costume, stick on silky white beards on Christmas and spread Christmas cheer. "The candidates are taught the art of smiling, dancing and shaking hands with children without getting too close,” said D’souza, adding that Santas are not allowed to hug children.
