HC wants probe into Gehlot land transfer
JAIPUR, April 28, 2009: With just over a week to go before the May 7 polls in the state, Rajasthan High Court on Monday directed a city court to start proceedings in a case of land allotment involving chief minister Ashok Gehlot. The high court also quashed the order of the trial court passed in
February this year whereby it had refused to order a police investigation into the alleged land scam and had taken unto itself the work of investigation under Section 200 of the CrPC.
Though Justice R S Rathore of the high court did not explicitly direct the trial court to order a police investigation in the case, it has asked the court to follow the direction given by the high court itself in the case of one Babulal last week in which the court had made it clear that in cases of a private complaint being filed by an individual under Section 156(3) of the code of criminal procedure, the trial court has no other option but to refer the matter for police investigation. The police, in turn, has to file an FIR before the investigation. An inference is now being drawn that an FIR shall be ordered to be
registered against Ashok Gehlot and four others. Source: The Times of India

Rains hurt up to 20 pct of Rajasthan wheat crop

MUMBAI, March 24, 2009 (Reuters) - Unseasonal rains and thunder showers have damaged between 3 percent and 20 percent of the wheat crop in India's fourth largest producer Rajasthan, a top official said on Tuesday. "Wheat crop has suffered an estimated 3 to 20 percent loss because of freak rains," Harbans Singh Yadav, additional director, Rajasthan farm department told Reuters on Tuesday. "Barley suffered 2 to 10 percent loss, chana 2 to 5 percent and jeera 5 to 15 percent," he added.
Rajasthan had earlier estimated wheat output of 6.38 million tonnes wheat and a rapeseed crop of 3.82 million tonnes. The state is India's top producer of rapeseed and accounts for 42 percent of national output. The state government may lower its winter output estimates for wheat, barley, gram, pulses and rapeseed, as crops grown over 273,000 hectares have been damaged because of the rains, the official said. Psyllium seed, popularly known as Isabgol, suffered the maximum damage with 50
to 90 per cent of the crop damaged by the rains, he said.

Merrill Lynch maintains 'buy’on Cairn India

March 23, 2009: Merrill Lynch maintains `Buy’ rating on Cairn India (CIL) with a target price of Rs 219. CIL recently revised guidance on development cost and production ramp up from its main Rajasthan block RJ-0N-90/1. It led Merrill Lynch to upgrade Rajasthan development cost and peak production rate. However, the ramp up to peak rate is now slower than earlier assumed.
Gains from higher production rate are largely neutralised by the slower ramp up. CIL now plans a production facility with a 205 kb/d capacity. There are several other indications suggesting peak production rate would be higher than the earlier guidance of 175 kb/d. Oil production is to start in 3Q09E as against 2H09E earlier. However production ramp up is likely to be slower than earlier
assumed.

half of the Chambal sanctuary on the river which demarcates the border of MP, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. The river is also home for Gangetic river dolphins and crocodiles. More water for Rajasthan from Bhakra Beas
Chandigarh, January 16, 2009: Water from the Himalayas is set to slake the thirst of the desert fields
of Rajasthan this summer with the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) releasing five lakh cusecs days of more water than its stipulated share to the state. While Rajasthan is set to have more water, Punjab and Haryana are likely to gain on the power front. Bhakra will step up power production as the BBMB has already crossed its targets till December 2008 and is likely to produce 10,000 lakh unit (lu) more than its target of one lakh lu for this financial year. With sufficient water reserves, BBMB is likely to produce 5,000 lu more than its target in the first half of the next fiscal year. The reason for this twin cheer is the fact that both the Bhakra and Pong dams are comfortably placed as far their water levels are concerned. With snowfall being reported in the upper Himalayas, steady streams are flowing into the Bhakra, with an inflow of 2,300 cusecs being reported yesterday.
Rajasthan, whose share was calculated at an average of 9,000 cusecs from January 1 to June 20, is presently drawing around 10,750 cusecs. Earlier, from September to December, it was drawing 13,200 cusecs. Bhakra has a water level of 1632 feet at present against a level of 1603 feet during the same period last year. Pong has a level of 1356 feet right now against a level of 1308 feet during this time last year. The heavy monsoon rainfall had allowed the dam authorities to fill up both dams to the maximum level permissible. Bhakra was at 1680 feet at the end of the monsoon reason, while Pong was at 1390 feet. Source: Tribune News Service
