The Cradle of Modern Chess, was held in Valencia last week
together with an exhibition match between two former world champions, Garry
Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov.
Kasparov- Karpov
1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Be7 4.cxd5 exd5
5.Bf4 c6 6.Qc2 Bd6
7.Bxd6 Qxd6 8.e3 Ne7 9.Bd3 Nd7 10.Nge2 h6 11.0-0 0-0 12.a3 a5 13.Rad1 b6 14.e4!? (Opening the game at
the right moment, after black weakened his c-pawn.) 14...dxe4
15.Nxe4 Qb8 16.N2c3 Ba6 17.Bxa6 Rxa6 18.d5! (The break allows white to dominate in the
center.) 18...Nxd5
19.Nxd5 cxd5 20.Rxd5 Ra7 21.Qd2!? (Others may prefer the
logical 21.Rfd1, but Kasparov sees the vulnerable black king.) 21...Nc5?
(Leaving the king without protection. He should have played 21...Ne5, for
example 22.f4 Nc6 23.f5 f6, making it more difficult to break through.) 22.Nf6+!
(Kasparov still has his great tactical skills, pouncing on the black king.)
22...gxf6 (After 22...Kh8 23.Rh5 Rd8 24.Rxh6+ gxh6 25.Qxh6 mates.) 23.Qxh6
(Threatening 24.Rh5.) 23...f5
24.Qg5+ Kh8 25.Qf6+ Kg8 26.Rxf5 Ne4 27.Qh4 Re8
28.Rh5 f5 (After 29.Rh8+ Kf7 30.Qh7+ Ke6 31.Qg6+ Ke7 32.Rh7+ Kd8 33.Rd1+ white
